Who Was The...

My guess is that you won't see too many recruits at games right now, especially during the week as they have their own high school teams to practice and play for. Weekends are the best shot at getting recruits in if they don't have a game themselves which probably isn't very often.

I hope Wilkins and his dad were able to make the game. Would have been perfect for them to see his dad's old team and Wilkins's (hopefully) new team play. After a game like that, any recruit should be like, "oh yeah, I want to be here."

Young gent behind the BU bench? Looked like a fairly tall bloke....

Here is a picture, from the TV broadcast, of the tall kid who was directly behind the BU bench Tuesday. The one on the far left is former BU player Michael Stewart, and the one on the right is the kid we are talking about. Flash Flanagan was seated just to the right of this kid. He is definitely not John Wilkins, who I have been assured was not at the game. He appears to be an inch or two taller than Michael Stewart, so he is maybe 6'8" or 6'9".

Does anyone recognize who he is?

I recognize him. The best player in the history of Peoria High School basketball, class of 2000. I think he even has some eligibility left.

If you are referring to Beau Smith---
Yes, I think it could be him, but I am not too familiar with what he looks like.
And no, IMO he wasn't the greatest player ever from Peoria Central, though I wouldn't want to get into an argument about that. Central had such great stars as AJ Guyton, Chris Reynolds, Marcellus Sommerville, Daniel Ruffin and others. I wonder what Coach Buescher would say?
And didn't he graduate before 2000?

Also- here is a list of prominent players at Central under Chuck Buescher from an old page on the BU website-
Prominent Pupils
• A.J. Guyton (Indiana), Bulls, Europe
• Mike Hughes (Nebraska, UW-Milwaukee)
• Shaun Livingston, L.A. Clippers
• Chris Reynolds (Indiana)
• Daniel Ruffin (Bradley junior point guard)
• Beau Smith (Louisville)
• Marcellus Sommerville (Bradley), Europe
• Charles White (Bradley)
• Tony Wysinger (Illinois), ICC Head Coach

Indeed it is the greatest player in Peoria High School history, Jordan Merriman, brother of former BU and ICC bball standout Rachel Merriman.

Is this an inside joke? I don't get it.

Anyway, when it was stated that he was from the class of 2000, I looked up this old page from the now-defunct site Illinois High School Elite
Here are the top high school players in Illinois from that class of 2000--

A couple were really good like #1 Darius Miles, who went right to the NBA, and #5 Dwayne Wade, who is an NBA superstar. But what I find interesting is how many of the top players never had much of a career beyond high school.
#2 Andre Brown played a few years in theCBA and Europe, then has been a reserve with 3 different NBA teams the last 3 years.
#3 Cedrick Banks had a decent career at UIC, then played in Europe. He was the Player of the Year i the French Pro B league in 2005-2006, then moved up to the French Pro A league where he is still playing (the same league as Marcellus Sommerville).
#4 Imari Sawyer was very talented, but after a couple trouble-filled years at DePaul, he left school and was never able to hook on with a pro team anywhere. Last reported he was lighting up the scoreboard in the Chicago Park District.

a few more on the list had decent college careers, and may be playing pro somewhere, but many more disappeared.
Note Phillip Gilbert at #32 and Jabbar Battle at #26.
