Wichita State picks up Oregon transfer PG

sounds like he is similar to Ehimen Orukpe -- who after more than four years since he verbaled, and after claims that the guy could be a starter from day one (despite avg. 5pt/5 reb in juco)-- still has scored a grand total of only 19 career points at Wichita......

In EO's defense, its hard to expect anymore productivity out of him when he's playing the back up to Stutz, who is the back up to Durley. Durley and Blair were a great combo at the post, and would have pressed to see them be replaced during last season. Stutz is a player with great touch around the net, and will only get better. I think EO's production isn't completely due to his skill set, although I do agree somewhat that he has been a let down. However when you're so highly touted coming into a program, its really hard to meet such high expectations. I'm looking for EO to be what Stutz was to the program last year, a nice bench player, that can play around 20 mpg.

I hope that comes to fruition, as I'd like to see EO play 20 mpg when we play you guys. He was horrible last year and I didn't see much potential in the instances he played. Of course, we had a big man last year who didn't do much better and has been riding the pine for 4 years now, though I think he'll be a bigger factor this season...a little bigger anyways.

b.t.w. - happy for you guys winning the NIT last year! Gonna' be tough to better that next season with all the key losses, but we'll see. Toure needs to step it up big-time, and I think he will.

..Fred had said that he was ready to get the recruiting process over, so he could focus on basketball and not recruiting. ..

I read some comments from Van Vleet (if I can find the link I'll post it) which indicated he wasn't caught up in making his recruitment a big affair or focused on getting a "big time" offer

In this issue of the Sun Times Hoops Report they express equal surprise that a kid would commit right now just as the hot and heavy July evaluation period begins...
"AAU scene hits Chicagoland this week
The all-important July evaluation period, where Division I college coaches are
finally able to get out and watch prospects in tournaments around the
country, begins July 6. ...
Interestingly, prior to Rockford Auburn's Fred Van Vleet committing to Wichita
State on Monday, there wasn't a single player in the Hoops Report's Class of
2012 Top 25 that had offered up a verbal commitment
prior to the July
evaluation period."

so whatever the reasons -- kids committing at this time are in the minority...

I think he'll turn it around this year, EO that is. But that is the ever optimist in me. And thanks, I think we'll be better off than most expect. We return Ragland, Murry, and Kyles. All of which were great last year once Coach finally set the line up with Ragland being the PG, and not doing the switch between Point and Shooting Guard for Murry. That really hurt Murry's flow in the game, and didn't allow Ragland to have any confidence. I think Stutz and Hall will be great playing the post too. Its just the strongest part of our roster was our depth, and we won't have the roster next year to confidently put in any 9-10 guys.

I think that because it is so out of the ordinary, people are trying to find reasons why he did. Negative reasons, because Lord knows, a young man who is on top of his schooling, his basketball, and his life, can't just make a strong decision early in his recruiting time frame. That he found a program that was confident in him, and one that totally fit his personality and enjoyed the atmosphere. You know what I mean? There has to be skeletons somewhere. He has to be scared about showing off for big talent, he doesn't feel like he belongs in the BCS, etc etc. The list goes on that I've heard. And I'm not saying you feel this way haha. I've just seen a lot of talk around the web about how Fred committing so early is stupid etc. I think its stupid that people think that, I think he made a great decision, and more young men should follow his foot steps. You don't have to be Lebron James and have a press conference at the last minute to tell where you're going. So many people are worried about image and flash these days, and I personally think that how Fred handled the situation speaks volumes to the fact that he is all business, he wants to win, he's confident in WSU and the Coaches, and he is ready to come in and play right away, but understands he is a team player and will be a situation guard or a back up his Fresh year, if they don't redshirt him, since his Freshman year he will be behind Demetric Williams, who will be behind Malcolm Armstrong.

even though you quoted me exactly courtesy of the auto-quote feature -- you then took the giant leap to invent some dark plot such as
"...trying to find reasons why he did. Negative reasons...scared..."

BUT -- had you only bothered to actually read your exact quote -- you'd see I clearly stated it MATTERED NOT what his reasons were...I don't care and never bothered to even speculate...I made mention ONLY that it IS unusual -- and showed proof that it is UNUSUAL.....as none of the other Top 25 in the entire state are doing it...

this is an observation that's completely neutral -- certainly not negative so please try to stay on topic and not start attacks

I think what ShockerHoops meant was that there are a number of people out there (not you, specifically) trying to find negative reasons why FVV committed so early. I didn't read it as an attack on you.

As for EO, I believe he already possesses the defense and rebounding necessary to play 15 minutes a game and get 6-7 boards in that time. Offensively he wasn't ready. I suspect this year he will be able to play 10-15 a game, average 4-5 rebounds and 4-5 points. As a senior in 2012-2013, who knows. He'll be the starting center. Fouling will determine whether he gets 25 minutes a game or 15. I will be happy if he averages 20 minutes, 8 points and 10 boards.

Uwadiae is a little different player. From what I can tell he's more aggressive and will develop a little faster than Orukpe. That he will have three years of playing in the States at top prep schools before coming to Wichita is a plus. Throw in a redshirt year and I hope he'll be a taller version of Dinma Odiakosa.

You totally mistook what I was saying. I was not referring to you at all, but other reports, articles, and comments around the web regarding FVV. Not you at all. So I wasn't attacking you, or saying you were disparaging FVV's signing at all. I was just quoting your post because you mentioned that kids committing this early was a rarity, and it sparked the thought in my head that others had mentioned that, but the majority of comments after making that remark that it was of the negative kind, that he was scared to show is talent in the evaluation period, he isn't that good, Illinois' talent level is down this year, etc.

I didn't mean anything by my post to incite you, or to start an argument, was just using your comment as a spring board to discuss those points that came to my mind.

OK - it sure sounded like you were citing my comments as negative and even used the word "stupid" while I never said any such thing....
I was instead hinting that he must really see something he likes or be really certain for some undisclosed reason...

Recall Michael Orris - who had supposedly only one offer but was said to be on the verge of blowing up...
then he jumps when he gets his 2nd offer - from Creighton and commits...
now he's completely uncertain (people advising him many different ways and even possibly some sleazy offers) and renegs on his Creighton verbal
....so obviously these early spring verbals just ahead of the hot AAU season are few and far between, and often associated with kids pulling their verbals and reopening their recruitment...

If FVV plays well, then he will get calls and people will get in his ear..count on it...

I've heard WSU has just signed 2012 recruit Fred Van Fleet, a PG from Rockford...

Fred's brother, Darnell Van Vleet just signed to play at Highland CC ..but one other older brother, "JD" (Joseph) is already at Highland CC and will be a sophomore there this year.

I've heard WSU has just signed 2012 recruit Fred Van Fleet, a PG from Rockford and Top 3 in IL. He sounds like a good one for WSU and the Valley.

Something new on Van Fleet... Should be fun to watch him compete against BU's Fields...

Fred Van Fleet of Rockford Auburn in 2011-2012. Van Fleet amazed scouts in the summer before his senior year, and he took it to another level when his senior year came. His ability to score and facilitate helped Van Fleet lead his high school to a historic season and a trip downstate. Although his game wasn't in the Chicago area, Van Fleet's game buzzed throughout the state. Look for Fred Van Fleet to continue to show his game off at division-1 Wichita St.

Henry Uwadiae never qualified at Wichita then went to Kirkwood (juco)...
he has now signed with Green Bay...

He's 6-11 but in his only season at Kirkwood his numbers were not very impressive..
1.6 ppg, 1.8 rpg, and on the season he had zero assists to go with 15 turnovers
