Will Bradley ever.....

Another JC transfer.....Hows that been working out for them?

Some good ... some not so good :D

But, bring the wide body in for next year so that he has a year to develop. Then for '09-10, we have

SM - Jr
EM - So
AW - Sr
CR - Sr
WE - Jr
AT - RS So
Big Body JC guy (like Zach) - Sr

Plug in a decent big guy JC guy like Zach, and I think you've got a good team that can compete for the season title.

Going to the sweet 16 was a lot better than winning the MVC.

I addressed that in another thread, but winning the MVC tourney title or tourney is historically the way to make it into the NCAA. Sometimes the 2nd place team gets in, and once in awhile the third palce team slips in. Winning a MVC crown and achieving post season success essentially goes hand-in-hand. We are not, and never will be, the Big Ten, ACC, etc. 2005-2006 may have been a one-off experience for the MVC. We haven't even hit A-10 performance from where they were in the '90s. Sorry, but I'm being realistic. 12 and 20 years since some form of an MVC crown is absolutey intollerable. As far as Drake goes, they were consistently building up the program, but most of us conference followers were so biased, we failed to take note.

OK, but what if "Big Body JC guy (like Zach)" is more like Big Body JC guy (like Salley) or Big Body JC guy (like David Collins)?

Or what if he floats around like Mary Poppins? What's your point? I clearly stated like Zach and that's what I meant. If I meant like MS or DC, I would have said so.

There should be concern. We are losing JC and Daniel, and no one is replacing them. It will be an issue of whether or not players develop enough to pick up the slack, and even then, we will have a depth issue. These concerns, though, are contingent on the satff continuing with our current system and what types of players see the floor. Maybe things will change to accomodate the skills of the players we have (rather than forcing a system), maybe they will not.

I think the hope/thought was that WE and AT are the type of big guy to fit the system--agile with a face-up game like in FIFA--the inspiration for our system. Another note to Jim and Phoenix's coach on that system, though--have you ever noticed that international teams have multiple 6'8"+ players on the floor at the sametime that are agile with face up games, so there is not a need to play three sub-6' players or there-abouts. In other words, those teams have athletic size and so the system works in that they have players who can shoot outside, handle the perimiter, and they have the size to rebound and handle interior defense. Have you noted that Jim? I do not think so. You cannot have your number one shooter, at a small 6'5" guarding the other teams' post players--it wears him out. He is getting double teamed on offense and having to handle a burden on defense. JC must be exhausted. Oh well, there, I said it.

So you're assuming Player X will be like Zach Andrews and disregarding the possibility he could turn out like Salley or DC?

Are you really Carnac the Magnificent?

Your logic is flawed. The coaching staff tried to bring in decent JC big men (like Zach) when they recruited #22 and #4. Neither of those guys has brought as much to the team as Zach did in his two years here.
But you make your statement as if the coaching staff can simply go out and choose to recruit a JC big man that they know will provide at least what Zach Andrews did. It obviously isn't that simple. I highly doubt that the coaching staff's rationale behind recruiting #4 was "Man, we could really use a 7-footer that can sit down at the end of the bench for us and provide 0 quality minutes after December"...

Here ... Go anyalze this (o).

Can someone not make a simple post around here without people taking and turning it and twisting it around into something it wasn't meant to be?

I'll pass on the anal-ysis...thanks for the offer though.

Nobody is twisting anything around...You said: plug in a big JC guy like Zach and we will be good to go...
We merely pointed out that it obviously isn't that simple. You try to recruit players like Zach and POB every year...and unfortunately, most of those attempts end up being more like #4, #22, or Xavier Crawford.

It is simple. I was stating a very simple and clear premise. I said a guy like Zach. Assuming that we are talking about the same thing - i.e., basketball playing ability. I did not say a guy that looks like Zach, but can't play like Zach. So, if you believe that #4, #22, or XC are not like Zach, then you also understand that I was not referring to them.

It seems like lately there has been a lot of concern around here, and for the most part I think it's justifiable, but I'm just wondering what do you guys see as solutions to our concerns?

Fair enough...using your oversimplified approach to the recruiting process, the way to fix BU's problems is quite simple. I can't believe I never thought of this sooner!!! Thanks for enlightening me!!!
All we need for next year is to be able to plug in a center like POB, a shooting guard like Hersey Hawkins, and a couple of wing players like Anthony Parker and Danny Granger to go along with Maniscalco and I think we could win a title next year...
Go ahead and pass this simple request along to Coach Les and let him know that we'll do our part by clearing some space in the rafters for all those championship banners...
Thanks.

Graft SS's head (BB intelligence and desire) onto DC's (7' highly athletic) body?

Well, I think we all agree that BU can not expect to land the sure-thing big man out of HS. Those guys go to the Ohio States, Dukes, Kansas, and UCLAs of the world. Therefore, we will always need to recruit the "project" player at the big man slot and hope that he develops into a player who can contribute. Consequently, the one thing that JL can control is having a coaching staff that is adept in teaching fundamentals to big guys because that is the type of recruit we will land.

Is this coaching staff capable of coaching big guys??? I don't know and don't care to speculate beacuse I'm not in a postion to. One would have to be knowledgeable on big guy training techniques and be able to observe practices to know whther the failure for some players to develop (e.g., DC) is a function of his limitations or the limitations of the coaching staff. I don't know how to coach big men and I don't get to watch practices. So, as a program supporter and fan and a JL supporter, I will trust that he has assembled a decent set of coaches. I will also trust him to adjust his coaching staff if he needs to.

I didn't say or imply any of those things. You are off on a wild tangent again.

Simply put yes they will. The question is really when. I say when they have the team that can score in the inside and rebound. Let's just assume we will always have better than average guards what we never seem to have are big men that can dominate. We will need more than one and JL will need to play the two at the same time for long periods of time.

I know there are some Gary William bashers but what MD is doing in the 2nd part of the season is what I thought we should be doing. The difference is GW plays his 2 bigs together for big minutes and has been doing it from the start even when they were struggling. Now they are ready for a run in the ACC behind NC and Duke. Maybe if JL would have played our bigs earlier and often we would have an assemblance of an inside game.

We need a center that is capable of rebounding, scoring and defending ; plenty of mid-majors have good centers and I think we need to make recruiting one a major point of emphasis, Merfeld was able to get Strickland to go to Evansville and he turned out to be a pretty good player; I just think we are spending most of our time looking at guards and in order for us to be a much better team we need a good center .
