Some thoughts on the back and forth arguing that sometimes happens on here.....

Saints-and-Sinners-Logo.jpg

Everyone just take a deep breath and relax a second.

We all know Bradley hasn't won as much as we would all like in the past few years. We can also all agree, I think, that under Jim Les, Bradley has been mostly clean. To be sure, there have been some trouble here and there, but for the most part Bradley has avoided major crimes and headlines.

The world is gray. It is not black and white. Bradley is not 100% clean, 100% of the time. We are also not UNLV from the 1980's-90's either.

Jim Les/Bradley are not sinners or a saints, they are just like the rest of us...somewhere in between.

As Obama said, there is a fringe right, a fringe left, and a "sensible center".

Not exactly that far...but come on. Everyone acts like it's all extreme this or that

Amen. People who only see the bad ignore the good, and people who only see the good ignore the bad. And there is plenty of both that you can cite. It's probably the same with every coach in every program.

I will say that I still haven't met a member of the "lifetime pass" club. Are there any?

Jim Boeheim and Coach K might be as close as it gets and I'm not sure we'll see that sort of tenure again once they leave.

That is a presumptuous thing to say. I know you only like to hear good stuff. I don't assume you don't recognize there are things that are wrong. I get you just don't want to hear it.

Why do you assume that just because something isn't said, isn't recognized? I don't look for false negatives.

I would say in the past there were alot more because there was alot more loyalty back in the day, ie. John Thompson, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, Tom Izzo(although that was put to the test this past off season), etc.

But I think he was regarding to the issue at BU and I have never seen anyone say "lifetime contract" for anyone involved on both sides

I agree with JD and I posted on another thread that there is a whole lot of gray area that some people either dont understand or choose to ignore because it doesnt fit their views, so it has to be their way or the opposite. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, its a message board for petes sake, but we all want the same thing which is success for Bradley university, and in particular the men's basketball program.

There have been people on the negative side of the spectrum who have insinuated that there are some fans who want to give Coach Les a "lifetime contract." Their words. My point is I don't think those people exist.

Here is the issue we have, and which we will continue to enforce-
Fans have always had plenty of opportunity to post negative criticism. We can find it in almost every thread. But yesterday a thread was started about the letter to the sports editor which pointed out a few good things about Coach Les and the Bradley program. One simple thread with a couple nice words, and immediately the thread was taken over by negative posters dragging out and amplifying every possible negative issue for the millionth time, even trivial issues and matters which happened as much as 8 years ago. It seems to be impossible for anyone to post a single positive opinion here without the negative people telling us we are wrong and regurgitating all the same things and trying to take over the thread. I and many fans are tired of that. We are not in favor of censorship, but the obsession of pissing in everyone's kool-aid is threatening to turn this board into another miserable form of ValleyTalk, or the PJ Star forum, and we won't allow that to happen. Sorry if that hurts the sensitivites of some, but they can always go back to the other board and lob attacks back at us as they always do.

I understand most of what you post. I actually did not read all of that thread, and I didn't post in it at all.

However, as I tried to state above, both "sides" or views need to realize that there is a middle ground.

BU is not perfect.

BU is not at rock-bottom either.

Again, we all want success, we just have different views of how that might be achieved.

I agree, although the most upfront and consistent way to deal with posts that do not follow the TOS is probably to delete them, rather than responding to them in the thread and then deleting later. My opinion. Your site.

The PJ star board talks about this board more than the team. You should feel honored. :)

There have been people on the negative side of the spectrum who have insinuated that there are some fans who want to give Coach Les a "lifetime contract." ....

what?? I am pretty closely affiliated with many if not most of the truest, most die-hard, long time, loyal BU fans and JL-supporters...
and this is the very first I have ever hard of the concept of giving JL a "lifetime contract". I have never even heard of anyone mentioning such a thing up 'til now...

If someone actually believes or alleges that such a contract has ever been proposed, considered, offered, or even theorized, then I believe they are loony and just making things up.

But then, that is a common, though disreputable, way to argue -- to infinitely exaggerate the perceived opinion held by the other individual, then make it sound like his opinion is way too extreme and thus preposterous...this is the msnbc-way of attacking Sarah Palin...

I think the reference to a "lifetime contract" is usually intended as more of a joke, but it is an example of exaggerating the stance of opposite side in a discussion to make your argument look more rational.

Maybe. Here are four examples I found in 5 minutes....

Lifetime contract. Just say it.

I challenge you to find a coach that had a better final 12 games in the 2006 season! Lifetime contract!

Yup. Lifetime contract. Coach K just sealed it for us.

Jim gets a lifetime contract since he was a good player.

If you want the sustained mediocrity that comes with the stability of keeping Les around, then go for it....Let's sign him to a lifetime contract and insure that we will play in the 4/5 game at the Valley Tourney for the next 42 consecutive years! Yippee! Can't wait.

I think one can see from each context, that those were silly comments not meant to be taken seriously -- three of which are used by someone who is actually trying to state just the opposite, that they want JL out of there...

As I said, it happens here a lot. It is a common debating technique used as a measure to exaggerate the stance of the person you disagree with to make them look absurd.

I have to agree.....I recognize whats GOOD about BU but I'm not afraid to talk about our shortcomings.

I don't have his signature but a poster on the other board has a good one that says..."A REAL fan recognizes/applauds his teams accomplishments but isn't afraid to speak out about its shortcomings."

Thats a terrible paraphrase on my part but I think the point is made.

JD has it correct.....BU is no sinner OR saint. JL is not all good OR all bad.

People would have to have their heads buried in the sand to think all is well with BU ON the court. But I respect those that would rather just discuss the good stuff but don't label me anti anything if I choose to speak out about whats bad.

And IF you don't want to hear the bad stuff you either have to start your OWN board and moderate it to your taste or hope someday THIS board allows ONLY good things to be said.

Personally I think that would lead to a very boring board but thats just me.

The discusions on here will get better as soon as BU does.....JMHO
