Bradley branding and mascot

Good work. But, I think they may already know that, FWO. That argument was, in fact, a key point of the argument made by Ken Kavanagh and the Bradley legal team when they fought the NCAA. And I believe it was an important reason why the NCAA eventually relented in their witch hunt, and allowed Bradley to retain the Braves name.

interesting.... KK was awesome

I got 1 reply so far, and this reply has led me to believe that they do know about it and they don't care, so they purposely made that video with the wording that "there is only one definition"

You don't have to think too hard about what it would be like of we lost- we would have already changed to the Bradley Squirrels a long time ago.
We won because the NCAA clearly backed down, and allowed us to keep the name that tens of thousands of alumni have always known Bradley by- the Braves. Other schools were not so fortunate, and were forced to change their names. We can debate the future effects, but everyone is entitled to an opinion about it.

There is nothing to say we would have been the Squirrels, you're proposing something ridiculous to give your argument credence.

At best we tied. The NCAA allowed us to keep a watered-down name of "The Braves."

And you are absolutely right, everybody is entitled to an opinion, and I certainly respect those who are more passionate about their affinity to a name than I am. :)

Sorry if it caused confusion. My use of the term "Bradley Squirrels" was a rhetorical reference to the fact we would have changed to a new name a long time ago if we had not actually won the part of the battle with the NCAA involving the Braves name.

well...correct me if I am wrong anywhere on this...but didn't we fight a multi-year battle with NCAA, back and forth, with NCAA trying to strip BU of our mascot, nickname, tradition, and everything else...
and didn't we do everything humanly possible to fight this battle with NCAA - who clearly DO NOT LIKE Bradley University (as was demonstrated in 2006 when they slapped big penalties on BU for miniscule "unintentional and inadvertent violations" (their own words!))..

and when we WON that battle and got to keep our name, "Braves", didn't we all celebrate and enjoy it
and hope NOBODY would every threaten to take our name away again???

So, I ask -- why after such a LONG, HARD battle and a satisfying VICTORY...
I ask why are we laying down our victory and willingly giving up what we worked SO HARD and SO LONG to win?

Watched the video and did the survey the other night and came up with an idea for a new nickname that would be really cool.

While I like Gargoyles (it is distinctive and could create a really cool mascot), I suggested the name "Centurions." It did come about because, in the video, they talked about the Centurion Medal, but it also makes a good nickname. Imagine the mascot ops there.

Will be interesting to see where it all turns out.

I found this old thread - note all the joy & jubilation when we won this battle with NCAA 6 years ago - so why are we now willing to dump our victory in the trash heap?

then in this post I point out that Bradley used the term "braves" in a NON-Native American sense more than 40 years before they ever used it in the Indian context -
and thus it is the precedent to prove it is NOT offensive or hostile..

sounds hostile towards ancient Roman soldiers if you ask me.

Do you have a problem with the Michigan State Spartans, The San Jose State Spartans, the Valparaiso Crusaders, and many other similar names? :)

BTW, here are a couple pretty good lists of college nicknames-

By nickname-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_sports_team_nicknames

By school-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_team_nicknames_in_the_United_States

BTW, Centurions is not listed as a nickname by any of the thousands of colleges and junior colleges in the country.

How about the Bald Eagles- isn't that the national bird? There is only one small college in the entire US that uses the nickname Bald Eagles.

Was not aware that "Centurions" isn't a nickname used by someone else. That makes it more appealing as we would be unique.

I'll be honest, I love the "Braves" nickname and the suggestions in the video (Lions? Eagles? Brave? Come on...) leave me a bit indifferent. If we're going to change it, it would be nice to have some homage to the past. We could do that somewhat with "Centurions" (yes, let's offend the ancient Romans) but I don't see it happening.

IMO "centurions" is virtually synonymous with "warriors" "spartans" "soldiers" etc.... diff historically, but yet another warrior nickname.

hey I got it.

The Bradley Bluff ;-)

Like "we are the BLUFF" because the school is up on a bluff

togetherness, pride, intimidation. sign and seal

Our mascot could be perhaps a NA warrior or something?

I was hooked by the 1949-50 Bradley Braves squad and all the genuine fervor they generated. Kept a scrapbook with articles and photos of every game that season and the next. Ate too many Braves Ice Cream Bars produced by Rozelle's Dairy. And wished my grade school's nickname was the Braves instead of the Red Devils. Can't imagine any other nickname for my team than the Braves and indicated that in the survey.

St. Bernard's?

correct - the Chief's Club changed to the Braves Club about 5 years ago - just further effort to wipe out any reference to anything "Native American"

btw - spoke with a friend who is in the business locally of screen printing T-shirts, logos, and selling apparrel & memorabilia...
and he said a few things about Bradley's new logos but I will only repeat a few of them...
..they are rather simplistic, and that extremely few people have inquired about items with the new logo - a noticable difference from when a school usually creates a new logo and there's an initial surge of interest and people wanting to buy...

he suggested that if BU want's their logo to identify the school better - especially with people who do not instantly know where we are located, that we should have included some reference in the logo like these people do...
