Montana gone- Transfer Portal news

Of the guys who went in the portal since Covid-

Kingsby, Antonio Thomas, Gabriel, Nolan, McAdoo, Hall, Roberts, Weathers, Ekono, Pettigrew, Ellis, Kyle Thomas, Zek Montgomery, Biliew, Hickman, Wol- were guys who maybe were happier elsewhere but they didn’t exactly prosper

Mast, Kent then maybe Almar did succeed but you’re right
Grass isn't always greener on the other side, either. Wheeler is making a mistake leaving just like Hickman. Time will tell

Yep will join Casey Alexander who he played against twice when Casey was at Belmont! Montana Made BU freshman history when he drained 7 three pointers in the first game. It will be very interesting to see how much playing time he gets at K-State!

All the reports appear to be based on this one original source-

Coach Wardle acknowledged it in the WMBD interview. But it is a little strange that there has been no official word from Kansas State or Casey Alexander. Nor has there been any mention from Montana Wheeler or his agent. Montana quickly retweeted transfer notices for his teammates, but has not posted anything about his own situation.

I’ve read a few articles posted on the 16th that talks about K-States 6 new transfers and Wheeler isn’t listed. They also talked about the 2 recruits

Not a good choice, but oh well...he couldn't take the physicality from UNI and UNI proved to be so much less physical that a school from the Power 5 in the tourney. I don't think we'll hear much about Wheeler at K State or anywhere else he goes for his college career.

At any rate, BU is going much bigger next season so Wheels wouldn't have fit in.

I think we'll hear about him, but for wrong reasons - Kansas State is going to be very bad this year, and based on the way their roster looks I think Tana is going to start / get a lot of playing time at the least. It won't be as bad for him individually as being buried on a roster would be.

He could get playing time next year, since nearly the entire Kansas State roster under Jerome Tang has left. The only returning player for 2026-27 is a 6'6" shooting guard named Andrej Kostic-

But, Casey Alexander did get commitments from 2 other point guards so far, who will also vie for playing time.-
Brandon Rechsteiner- a 6'6" PG portal transfer from Colorado State (12 ppg, 2.5 apg) -
Stats- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/5103590/brandon-rechsteiner
And
Jaylen Alexander (no relation to Casey)- a 6'2" high school PG from Oxford, Alabama. He was committed to Belmont, but switched his commitment to Kansas State. He was rated as the top player and the Mr. Basketball in the state of Alabama and averaged 17.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and 4.4 apg his senior year. He scored over 2000 points in the high school career.

Casey Alexander still has a few available scholarships, so he will likely get a few more players, but IMO, he has bigger needs than point guard.

Casey and Montana were lured away by the $$ and exposure, and both would have had a pretty good situation had they stayed...can't root for them next season even tho I thought highly of both last season. Wouldn't mind seeing K State win about 10 games next season and Bradley 20+ ;)

So you are saying if Wardle leaves for more money and a better League you would not be happy for him. Some of the comments that some of you are saying about players leaving are ridiculous.

There is context behind this that you're not considering. And how on Earth are the comments about players leaving ridiculous? I haven't seen any.

Wardle wasn't a player at BU in his playing days like Alexander was (for Belmont) and he only was head coach for 5 years there with only this past season being a great one.
Sorry, but he screwed Belmont whether he intended or not...at least wait until after the post-season to announce his switch or wait to accept anything until after your TEAM'S season is over. Half those Belmont players aren't even going to taste an NIT and they could have made a nice run. Sucks for them, but yeah - it's all about the head coach and not passing up the opportunity, right?

That's what turned me off more than anything - not the fact he left for K State because you can get better talent eventually with more NIL and a much better fan base than Belmont's (which is quite sad).
We're living in a "me first" world - I get it. But I don't have to like it.

Gotta admire Ben Jacobsen for his loyalty at UNI - just very rare to see that anymore. I thought Casey was similar and had an apparently strong tie to Belmont, but that was easily untied.

Wardle is going to be lured eventually, but he's been here long enough to transform the program. Belmont may have been a 1-and-done (and they didn't even make the NCAA tourney) - could very easily go back to middle pack for a few years, and barring a Drake-like rebuild (in 2024), they will not finish Top 3 this coming season.

I will say I liked Montana a lot and feel as playing time goes he is a better fit in the Valley. Jumping up into the Big 12 just does not seem to be a good fit basically because of his size and strength. No doubt he went for the money but will he be satisfied with limited playing time.

Maybe it's hard to see not being in a millionaire's shoes, but so much more to life than $$ and a legacy in sports based on money alone is one that only lasts so long. With that said, I'd rather be a millionaire than living from paycheck to paycheck, which is pretty much where I am now with supporting a family.
