New Coaching Carousel for 2018-19

ISU, despite being perhaps the most athletic and most talented team last year was one of the worst defensive teams in the league last season. No doubt Mo would help them tremendously on defense.

Arkansas, who fired Mike Anderson a week ago, has called a press conference for this afternoon. It is assumed they will announce their new head coach. It was reported they were pursuing Kelvin Sampson, but he just signed a lucrative contract extension with Houston. So then they were reported to be after their 2nd choice, Eric Musselman.

Musselman will want $3 mil per year there - not final but gotta think he'll take the $$.

remember they were a Top 10 team almost all season - got as high as #6 on a couple occasions,
they were unanimous pick to win the Mountain West and even said by some to likely go undefeated...
... but they underperformed compared to the hype -

They went 5-4 down the stretch when it mattered...
..losing in the 2nd round of their own conference tourney but got an NCAA at-large bid
and got a rather surprisingly low 7th seed considering they were #14 ranked the week before
Then lost their first round NCAA game to a lower seed

But Musselman followed the Fred Hoiberg school of recruiting and built Nevada mostly out of unhappy transfers from other schools...
...so don't expect him to stop now, he will probably go right after players on other teams' rosters who may think they're not getting the respect they deserve.
I wouldn't even be surprised if he picks off a couple kids from the MVC like he did at Nevada - LINK - LINK

Why did Nevada get an at-large? They were 1-1 in Q1 games and other teams were left out with higher rankings and more Q1 wins.

Nevada had an NET of 23
who was ranked any higher that got snubbed?
I think the best NET that got snubbed was NC State at 33

btw- Musselman had 3 talented DI transfers coming into Nevada - so will they now switch to Arkansas?

One other coaching hire- Former Bradley player and assistant coach under Jim Molinari, Duane Broussard was an assistant under Steve Alford at New Mexico, and more recently at UCLA. He lost his job earlier this past season when UCLA fired Alford.
Broussard was just hired as an assistant coach under Jamie Dixon at Texas Christian University.

Here is an interesting twist.... Former Bradley assistant under Jim Molinari Duane Broussard, was fired by UCLA at the end of their season. Then a couple days ago he was hired as an assistant under Jamie Dixon at TCU. But now Jamie Dixon has emerged as a frontrunner for the UCLA job-
https://www.latimes.com/sports/ucla/...401-story.html

So if UCLA does hire Dixon away from TCU, it seems unlikely Broussard will stay at TCU. But will UCLA allow Dixon to bring Broussard with him as an assistant there, considering they just fired him? That will be interesting to see. :)

Also, it was reported earlier today that Arkansas was prepared to offer their head coaching job to Nevada's Eric Musselman. However, there has been no announcement yet. Musselman was reportedly in Fayetteville. Arkansas to interview with the Arkansas AD, and Arkansas had called a press conference for this afternoon, but then called it off. Apparently Musselman was offered the job, but nothing was agreed on, and Musselman returned to Nevada. Who knows what will happen next? Some rumors suggest he may be using the Arkansas offer to try to get Nevada to renegotiate his contract and boost his salary.
And now there are rumors that Arkansas has another candidate as a backup, and it is none other than Steve Alford, who was run out of town at UCLA-

This is all like a soap opera. :)

Texas A&M is reportedly targeting current Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams for their open head coaching job. They recently fired 8-year head coach Billy Kennedy.

Virginia Tech is paying Williams close to $3 million per year, and has a contract with him through 2023 which will increase to $3.3 million in the final year,
But Texas A&M has lots of money from their membership in the SEC and all their conference's success in BCS football, and will be able to pay more than Virginia Tech can afford.

The question is whether Buzz Williams wants to return to Texas A&M for the bigger money or is he happy at Virginia Tech?
Williams is a Texas native who has plenty of recruiting connections in Texas. He was also an assistant coach at Texas A&M under Billy Gillispie from 2004-2006.

There are now reports that Texas A&M will officially announce the hiring of Virginia Tech's Buzz Williams on Thursday-

Buffalo replaces Nate Oats with their assistant coach Jim Whitesell.
Whitesell formerly was head coach at Loyola and Lewis University.

Tennessee Tech hires former Alabama assistant John Pelphrey.
He has previously been head coach at South Alabama and Arkansas.

Apparently Nevada's Eric Musselman couldn't use the Arkansas offer to milk a big enough raise out of Nevada, so he has finally accepted the offer. Arkansas to announce a press conference soon to announce their new coach.

Virginia Tech's choice to replace Buzz Williams is reported to be Wofford's head coach Mike Young.

Chris Mullin has been head coach at St. John's for 4 seasons, and he has not had a winning Big East season or made it to the NCAA or NIT yet. There are a lot of fans who want a change. But .....

But then tonight-
Chris Mullin to step down as coach of St. John’s
https://nypost.com/2019/04/08/chris-...h-of-st-johns/

If this happens, reports suggest the top choice to replace Mullin is Bobby Hurley of Arizona State (formerly head coach at Buffalo).

This would definitely be interesting. Other than going back home, I don't know why Hurley would leave ASU after the foundation has built. Also, I would guess its much easier to recruit to Arizona.

lots of action in the last 24 hours...

Belmont hires Lipscomb's Casey Alexander
BYU looks filled, too
