New Coaching Carousel for 2018-19

Georgia State promotes assistant coach Travis Williams to Interim Head Coach.
And as noted above- Washington State hires San Francisco's Kyle Smith as their new head coach, and UNLV hired South Dakota State's T.J. Otzelberger

... UNLV hired South Dakota State's T.J. Otzelberger

South Dakota State takes only a few hours to hire their new head coach. They promote 3-year assistant coach Eric Henderson to fill their open head coaching position.

Interesting....We know now that the coaching search in 2011 dragged on and on because of ineptitude, and meddling by the President, as well as multiple candidates turning down Bradley's offers. However, we were told it was because they needed to do a thorough coaching search, and that they were required by the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to post notices advertising the open position for 2 weeks and to consider minority candidates. Yet we've seen numerous cases where schools complete their hiring within a day or two. Just another example of dishonesty from that group.

One other coaching hire- Former Bradley player and assistant coach under Jim Molinari, Duane Broussard was an assistant under Steve Alford at New Mexico, and more recently at UCLA. He lost his job earlier this past season when UCLA fired Alford.
Broussard was just hired as an assistant coach under Jamie Dixon at Texas Christian University.

Jim Molinari has been named the Interim Head Coach at Nebraska after the firing on Tuesday (March 26) of Head Coach Tim Miles while they pursue a coaching search.

California is said to be hiring Mark Fox

Texas A&M is reportedly targeting current Virginia tech head coach Buzz Williams for their open head coaching job. They recently fired 8-year head coach Billy Kennedy.

Virginia Tech is paying Williams close to $3 million per year, and has a contract with him through 2023 which will increase to $3.3 million in the final year,
But Texas A&M has lots of money from their membership in the SEC and all their conference's success in BCS football, and will be able to pay more than Virginia Tech can afford.

The question is whether Buzz Williams wants to return to Texas A&M for the bigger money or is he happy at Virginia Tech?
Williams is a Texas native who has plenty of recruiting connections in Texas. He was also an assistant coach at Texas A&M under Billy Gillispie from 2004-2006.

Hmmm ....if Texas A&M hires the Virginia Tech guy who came from Marquette
then will Virginia Tech hire the Marquette guy and then Marquette will go looking?

with the Hoiberg hiring - only 18 open spots left - altho more could open after the Final Four

Per Evan Daniels’ Twitter, Vandy is looking at former UNC Tar Heel, NBA All-Star, and current Grizzlies Assistant, Jerry Stackbouse as well as Hornets assistant and for Butler Bulldog 29 year old Ronald Nored.

This rumor is a bit surprising. Vanderbilt can afford to pursue and pay a big salary for a proven winner at the college level (both Bryce Drew and previous head coach Kevin Stallings were being paid around $2.5 million per year). But both those names mentioned (Jerry Stackhouse & Ronald Nored) have extremely limited coaching experience, and neither has ever been a head coach at the college level. Both would be bargains compared to what Vandy was paying Stallings and Drew.

Jerry Stackhouse's only head coaching experience was 2 seasons as the head coach of the Raptors 905 (2016-18), the G-League team of the Toronto Raptors. And he has no college coaching experience at any level.

Ronald Nored is a slightly familiar name to Bradley fans. When he was in high school in Alabama, he was recruited by Bradley coach Jim Les and was reported to have visited Bradley.

He committed to Western Kentucky, but then he de-committed after WKU head coach Darrin Horn left to take the head coaching job at South Carolina. Then there was an erroneous report from Rivals.com that he had committed to Bradley. But that was a mistake and he actually committed to Butler, who had gotten involved after he decommitted from WKU.

He had a pretty good playing career at Butler, then went into coaching immediately after his final season at Butler. He has limited head coaching experience having been head coach with the Long Island Nets (the G-League team of the Brooklyn Nets) for 2 seasons (2016-18).

Belmont's Rick Byrd announces he is retiring
He is currently 65 years old - has 805 career wins, 713 at Belmont where he's been for 33 years

Rick Byrd is the only head coach Belmont has ever had since joining Division I. Below is a link to his record, and other than his first few years while building the program, he has not had a losing season in the last 14 years. He has averaged 24 wins per season over the last 14 seasons. His teams made the NCAA Tournament 8 of those 14 years, won 11 regular season conference championships, and won 7 conference tournament championships in the A-Sun and OVC! He has had offers for better jobs and more pay, but has stayed loyal to Belmont.

BTW, it has been rumored that Byrd was one of the main reasons Belmont turned down offers to join the MVC in 2013 when Creighton left, and again in 2017 when Wichita State left. It might mean that if the MVC decides to expand again, they might be more likely to consider moving.

There is talk among ISU fans that now Bryan Mullins is hired as head coach at SIU, he will hire Brendan Mullins, his brother
as one of his assistants -
Brendan Mullins is currently an assistant under Dan Muller at ISU - and before that was an assistant at UIC - LINK

indeed ISU does lose another assistant coach...
Brendan Mullins was serving under Dan Muller but now leaves to join his younger brother at SIU

Jim Molinari has been named the Interim Head Coach at Nebraska ....
now that Fred Hoiberg is hired at Nebraska and Molinari is gone there
there's a couple people on the ISU board saying they want to hire Molinari for the open assistant spot on their coaching staff after Mullins left for SIU
I'd have to think Coach Mo would turn that offer down... ;)
