Remy Abell

I think the difference here DC is that the same people here on the message boards who wanted Les gone have changed their tune because Geno is only in his second year here. And I hope he proves to everyone that he can restore the program to greatness. But you can bet that if we suffer through another year or two like we did last season, these same people will turn on Geno pretty quickly! Again, I'm sure we all hope it doesn't come to that and he does well here.

Of course they've changed their tone bc GF is in his second year rebuilding a bad team. JL was in his 9th season and never finished better than 4th.

Why is it a bad thing to have expectations for a program and if those expectations aren't met, move on with a new coach. If GF hasn't produced results by year 4 I fully expect there to be rumblings about whether he's the right man for the job.

Right. I totally agree with you on what we expect from Geno after 4 or so years on the job. I still disagree with the assessment of JL from a lot of people, but just wanted to clarify that most of us will expect results from Geno within the next couple of years.

There were rumblings last year about whether or not Geno was the right guy for the job. People were questioning both his offensive and defensive philosophies and strategies.

I hate to say it but those that question a coach without looking at their past work from previous years has never coached or played bball. It takes time and the right personnel to run your system. I have to believe GF still does not have the right personnel in place. Some people will say he should adapt to his players but in reality not even the Zen Master could create a system with this personnel and win the Valley. Re-building takes time but by year 3 I expect market improvement. IMO we still need a big and hopefully one or two of these new recruits can shoot like a sharpshooter otherwise we'll be fighting again the following year from playing on Thu.

Xavier players play in a summer league like the one our guys used to play in down at the Riverplex, and Remy scored 39 points in his first game, then tweaked his knee and will sit out the rest of the summer.

Sheesh, now even players just recruited by BU get hit with injuries. BU has a serious MBB injury jinx!:lol::lol:

What might have been....

What might have been....

There have been a couple so-called Bradley fans who have derided Remy Abell and denied the obvious fallout when Bradley lost him in the coaching change. They said he is not a D1 player, that Geno could recruit better players, and they mocked the idea that he might have helped Bradley from becoming the laughingstock that they have become.

So let's revisit a few facts about Remy-
First, the claim that Geno can or already has recruited better guards is easy to de-bunk. Most of Geno's guard recruits, even the few that haven't left after just 1 or 2 seasons, have been busts.

Remy Abell, in his first 2 college seasons, played on not one, but TWO Sweet 16 teams at Indiana!
Indiana won 27 & 29 games in his 2 seasons (11-7 and 14-4 in the Big Ten), and Remy contributed on both of IU's extremely successful teams.
Last year, after he left Indiana, they dropped to 17-15, and 7-11 in the Big Ten. Probably a coincidence?

Now at Xavier, despite predictions by the haters that he would fail, he has started every game, been Xavier's most consistent player, played the 3rd most minutes on the team, and is 3rd on the team in scoring at 10.2 ppg.
More impressive, in Xavier's first 13 games, he is shooting 56% overall, one of the higher shooting percentages in the country for a guard! And he is now shooting 41% from three, which beats anyone Geno has had at Bradley in the last 3 years!
He also has a 3.0 to 1.0 assist to turnover ratio, which is also far better than anyone Geno has had-

Remy has been the most consistent player all season for Xavier, and he keeps getting better. He has lead Xavier in scoring their previous 2 games prior to tonight's game, and his scoring average keeps climbing. Over Xavier's last 5 games prior to tonight, his scoring average is a team-leading 12.4 ppg.

And in a late game tonight, Remy helped lead Xavier to an upset win over #25 ranked Georgetown 70-53.

Remy played a team-high 33 minutes, had 12 points, was 4-9 from the field, made 2-3 from three, and played great defense, as he always does.
Xavier is now 10-3 and 8-0 on their home court, and all 3 of their losses were close losses to good teams away from home.

So do you think he might have helped Bradley?

Losing Remy was a huge loss - he'd have been All-League and the go-to guy everyone's just dreaming about
..but other players who got run out had potential....
even Jordan Swopshire had potential...
we just don't stick with anyone very long...

Wish Geno could get 9 or 10 thousand fans to every game like JL did while never finishing better than 4th. Those 4 years you talk about is here. Looks like a mistake was made. What's wrong with keeping a coach for 9 years. We kept a coach on the Hilltop for 13 years or so whose MVC record was below .500 but he was a local favorite also.

Know why he left Bradley, but how come he left Indiana after being so successful.

Indiana is a whole different situation than most schools. Back to back Sweet 16's are not good enough for their fan base, and are considered unsatisfactory by their administration. Tom Crean felt he needed to sign a couple more high scoring guards, and Remy didn't provide enough offense for him. Some people think he made a big mistake. Their record dropped from a 29-7, 14-4 record in 2012-13 to 17-15, 7-11 last year, and they missed the NCAA tournament altogether, which is an unforgivable sin in Bloomington (though they did also lost a couple other key players). Most fans wanted Crean gone, though he is doing better this year and the heat has died down a little.

whether it is players fault or not - the kid was signed, sealed, and delivered...then was cut loose when we decided to clean house...
his loss was a result of an executive decision - made by someone who promised we'd be better right away...and those promises have failed miserably
