Rules for Participation Must Have Changed

He does have an overall winning record in conference play though. That couldn't be said about his potential predecessor. ;)

Can we just change the name of the board to 'JimLesFans.com' already? A mediocre-at-best coach loses his job, and all of the sudden it's rip the president, rip the AD, rip potential coaching candidates, applaud when guys transfers or ask out of their LOI's, and pat posters on the back because of 'warnings' of some sort...I thought this board was founded to combat all of these things that used to go on at another forum. I guess not.

Good comments - here's what the RFPs in part once stated:

I know Dane a little bit and he would likely be popular with the players. He's super personable, amazingly down to earth, and would also be a media darling.

That said...my honest opinion is the only things he has over Coach Les are age and upside at this point.

Barry Hinson and Dan Fife would not be an improvement in my opinion, we need to do better otherwise we will be looking for another new coach 4 years from now, just because these are great guys is not a reason to hire them, we need a bigger hire in order to have any chance at winning championships in the near future, neither one of these guys has ever won a title which should eliminate them unless BU is taking the cheap way out.

I always was a Barry Hinson fan when we was at MSU. What's the knock against this guy? Just because his teams were so close to getting into the tourney, but didn't get in?
Maybe not the best recruiter??? Could be, but didn't seem to be much of a problem when he was at Missouri St. Seems like a good X's and O's kind of guy and stressed good fundamentals, rebounding, sportsmanship, and I like his up-tempo style of play.
I wouldn't be disappointed in him, and I don't think anyone who's been a coach in the Valley should be considered recycled as a couple have eluded to.

So what's your point? What rules are not consistent or not being enforced? As far as I can see those rules, which have been virtually unchanged since the board was started over 6 years ago, have been applied fairly and consistently.

Why are some people so focused on trying futilely to find some little inconsistency in the way the board is run?

Anyone who doesn't like the rules can go somewhere else. I have always offered to gladly tell you where to go!
Or you can start your own board. Others have tried this option, though you would have trouble finding those sites or finding anyone else who posts there.

I have no problem with anyone speaking their opinion on most subjects, but we will not allow people to take shots at the loyal, hard working volunteer BU fans who moderate and run this forum.

There is nothing wrong with Barry..I like him too...However, we just HAVE to set our standards and requirements as high as possible. In no way should we settle for second best..The opportunity to hire a new coach does not come along very often...Let's get the best that we can possibly get...no settleing.

The old stand-by line is back!

Actually the mods follow the rules for the most parts. I believe most of the questions stem from a couple of other posters who regularly are allowed to severely bend the rules.

But you are correct. There are other places to post if people feel the need to.

I just think everyone wants a level playing field.

Funny how some people need to be reminded frequently. :)

I understand, but from the beginning we have never said the playing field is level here, and we do not guarantee free speech. All we're saying is that posters here should realize it is a priviledge to participate, not a right.

Awesome! Anyone who would poo-poo this guy doesn't know jack!

So wait, the same reason people wanted JL out - he never finished higher than 4th in the conference - is OK for a guy in a TERRIBLE conference? If this is our hire I will be incredibly disappointed and will not support the administration any longer, I will the school and team, but not the administration.

He is a great and funny guy, did a good job at Mo.St. but no titles, you do not fire a coach and replace him unless you are going after someone that is much better, Hinson is not much better.

So, let me get this straight, because I don't want Dan Fife hired I now love Jim Les? I question what the univeristy is doing, and thought that if we fired JL our hire would not be any better. Somehow, if I am right, now I love Jim Les? This is one of the most ludicrous statements I've ever heard. Pretty much, if you want to say JL is a bad coach, OK. But say something about a Summit league coach who has done no better, and that ridiculous.

I agree with what you're saying. I will not be excited by this hire in the least, and I'm sure it will cause me to lose faith in the admin. With that said, I'll still support the basketball team like I always have and hope that somehow he is the right hire.

..other posters who regularly are allowed to severely bend the rules...

JD -- I will bet dollars to donuts that I have singlehandedly had more posts deleted than the next 10 in rank put together...so I have no idea what the hey you can possibly be talking about...

+1 Great post! The last thing that we need to consider is a recycled MVC coach. We need to aim much much higher!

How do you not support the administration? Not why. Literally, how do you do that and still support the school and team?

I would have no problem with a young coach on the upswing, which Fife may be. There's no one BU can hire that will make everyone happy. Bradley could hire Phil Jackson, and people would complain that he is too old and can't recruit Peoria. We won't know if Bradley hire the right coach for likely 3 years. Retaining players from the last place MVC team or committed recruits should not be the primary concern with selecting the next coach. I'm more concerned with the next 5-10 years than next year.

Dave Reynolds has a piece on Dane Fife...I guess Dane doesn't need to hire a publicist.. ;)
http://blogs.pjstar.com/pressrow/2011/03/16/the-dane-fife-file/
..and I am going to be blunt because I guess I see facts, and am not impressed with fluff.....

DR says Dane
"has built an impressive resume in his six years as the school’s head coach....
six-year record totals are 10-18, 12-17, 13-18, 13-17, 16-15 and 18-12.
This season..fourth place - Summit Conference"

a full NINE of their wins were over teams whose RPI was 328 and higher or non-DI's!! Those are the worst 15 teams in D-I!
so they're really 9-12 against the top 327 teams in D-I....can we even use the words "impressive resume" here???

The Summit is one of the weakest conferences, 4th place still translates to RPI nearly 200 & SOS almost 300,
and barely a win over anyone whose RPI wasn't over 300!!

Does anyone think he might just be too similar to Jim Les in many facets to warrant consideration? Not saying right or wrong, just wondering. Usually when you hire after a fire, you tend to go to a polar opposite.

Looks like he has done some good things.
